Hunting Large-Spotted Genet with Likhulu Safaris

Scientific name: Genetta tigrina

Despite having small legs, the Large-Spotted Genet has a shoulder height of 210 mm. The body is elongated and measures 460 mm in length and 1.6 kg in bulk. The 400 mm long, thick, ringed tail is black and whitish-grey in colour. Short and partially retractable, claws help with climbing.

There is no overt sexual dimorphism. The brown or tan upperparts are covered in rows of rusty dots surrounded by black rings. The neck's lines blend into the black rings. The abdomen is pale. White spots around their mouth, nose, and area beneath their eyes.

The primary distinction between the Small-Spotted Genet and the Large-Spotted Genet is the latter's white-tipped tail as opposed to the former's black-tipped tail. Another distinction is the little spotted genet's all-black spots, which lack a rusty centre.

Its primary food sources are rodents and other small mammals like insectivores; amphibians, birds, and snakes are secondary. Its diet consists primarily of modest amounts of invertebrates. Will consume fruit as well.

Typically, breeding occurs in the warmer months. The large-spotted genet takes roughly 70 days to gestate and produces three young on average every litter. Indications are that the young remain in nests, made above ground, until they are weaned.
